Brunswick Community College is highlighting one of its longest‑serving and most influential faculty leaders this month: Robert Rogan, Chair of Languages & Communication, whose 22‑year career at the college has helped shape generations of students and the academic culture of the department.

BCC Faculty Spotlight: Robert Rogan Reflects on 22 Years of Teaching, Growth, and Community

When Robert Rogan first arrived at Brunswick Community College in 2004, he expected to teach English. What he didn’t expect was to find a place that felt like home. Nearly 22 years later, Rogan is now Chair of the Languages & Communication Department and one of BCC’s most respected faculty members.

Rogan moved to the region in 2000 and taught part‑time at UNCW while searching for a full‑time position. His interview at BCC changed everything. He was hired as an English instructor and quickly discovered a campus culture built on connection, collaboration, and genuine support.

“BCC has gone through what feels like a complete transformation over the last four years or so, and I’m excited to be part of it,” Rogan said. “It’s incredible seeing the number of students we serve almost double.”

That growth, he says, has brought new energy to the college. He credits BCC’s leadership and his colleagues for creating an environment where instructors feel valued and motivated—an atmosphere that directly benefits students.

Though his role as department chair includes significant administrative responsibilities, Rogan says the classroom remains the heart of his work. “The time I spend in the classroom is what gets me excited to come to work every day,” he said. “I learn so much from my students. They never cease to surprise and amaze me.”

Rogan’s passion for learning began in Roanoke, Virginia, where strong teachers helped him build a foundation that made college both manageable and enjoyable. He discovered a talent for writing essays and a deep love for literature, eventually earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from James Madison University.

His message to students today is simple: education is more than a grade. “Embrace education as a journey,” Rogan said. “It’s the everyday moments, the conversations, the questions, and the challenges that truly shape a life. Above all, stay curious and always be willing to learn something new.”

Outside the classroom, Rogan is a musician who enjoys playing guitar and bass. He is also an avid animal lover who regularly fosters rescue dogs—sometimes as many as four at a time. His current companion is a 13‑year‑old rescue named Olive, whom he considers family.

For more than two decades, Robert Rogan has helped BCC students discover their voices, strengthen their critical thinking, and cultivate curiosity. His dedication continues to leave a lasting impact on the college community.
