LAKE WACCAMAW — Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina is moving closer to its largest fundraising goal in years, announcing that supporters have already contributed more than $1.7 million toward the organization’s $2.5 million “Making Futures Brighter” Capital Campaign.
The campaign, launched to strengthen programs and facilities serving more than 100 children each year, has reached 68 percent of its goal. Leaders say the momentum reflects strong regional support for the organization’s mission of providing stability, healing, and opportunity for children who have experienced trauma.
For more than seven decades, Boys & Girls Homes has operated as a residential care and family‑support agency, offering what staff describe as “a true home” built on encouragement, structure, and second chances. The capital campaign is designed to reinforce that mission by funding both immediate needs and long‑term improvements.
Where Donations Make an Impact
According to the organization, gifts to the campaign help cover a wide range of needs, including:
- Replacing aging HVAC systems in cottages
- Purchasing a school van for Thomas Academy
- Adding a large arena fan to improve comfort at the BTS/Benton Arena & Exhibition Center
- Upgrading essential items such as refrigerators and other equipment
- Strengthening the BGHNC Endowment to support long‑term sustainability
Officials say the variety of giving options allows donors to directly support the areas that matter most to them, whether that’s educational resources, campus infrastructure, or daily living needs for the children in care.
“Every Dollar Makes a Difference”
Campaign organizers emphasized that the current operating budget relies on multiple funding sources, making community support critical. Each contribution, they said, has “concrete results” for the children who call the Lake Waccamaw campus home.
The campaign will continue throughout 2026 as Boys & Girls Homes works to close the remaining gap and fully fund the improvements outlined in the initiative.
