Body Scanner Detects Knife Hidden on Woman During Intake at Columbus County Jail

COLUMBUS COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SEAL

A woman being booked into the Columbus County Detention Center is facing additional charges after a body scanner detected a knife she allegedly attempted to smuggle into the facility.

According to arrest reports, Ashley Shantell Shaw, 35, of 14374 Old Lake Road in Riegelwood, was charged with possession of a weapon by a prisoner, disorderly conduct at a school, trespassing on and impeding a school bus, and misdemeanor child abuse. Her bond was set at $30,000.

The sheriff’s office said Shaw was taken into custody at the courthouse on Jan. 8 on the school‑related charges and transported to the detention center for processing. Deputies noted she had already been “thoroughly” searched before arriving at the jail.

During intake, however, the facility’s body scanner alerted staff to an object concealed under Shaw’s right breast. Deputies scanned her a second time after she denied having anything hidden. Following the second scan, Shaw surrendered a knife.

The incident report did not provide details about the allegations connected to the school bus disturbance.
