The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its food‑safety guidance, advising people at higher risk for listeriosis to avoid queso fresco–style cheeses, whether made from pasteurized or unpasteurized milk. The update follows a review of recent outbreak data showing these soft, fresh cheeses continue to be linked to Listeria infections.
People considered at higher risk include pregnant individuals, adults 65 and older, and those with weakened immune systems.
Listeria can cause pregnancy loss, premature birth, or severe infection in newborns. For older adults and people with weakened immune systems, the illness often leads to hospitalization and can be fatal.
This is not a product recall. The CDC’s update is a preventive advisory, noting that queso fresco–type cheeses can become contaminated even when made with pasteurized milk.
More information is available on the CDC’s Listeria prevention page.
