Art and the American Revolution: New England to South Carolina

Elizabeth Chew CEO of the SC Historical Society

Horry County Museum to host July 18 lecture examining Revolutionary‑era artwork

Conway, SC — The Horry County Museum, in collaboration with Coastal Carolina University and the South Carolina 250th Commission, will present Art and the American Revolution: New England to South Carolina at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, in the Museum’s McCown Auditorium.

The lecture will explore how artists depicted the American Revolution both during the conflict and in the decades that followed. The program will highlight images of the war, its leaders, and the ways newly independent Americans viewed and remembered the struggle for freedom 50 and 75 years after independence.

The discussion will be led by Elizabeth Chew, CEO of the South Carolina Historical Society. Chew, a historian, curator, and educator, has worked in museums and historic sites for more than 30 years. She joined the Historical Society in January 2024, overseeing statewide efforts to collect and share the stories of South Carolinians.

Before arriving in Charleston, Chew served as Executive Vice President and Chief Curator at James Madison’s Montpelier in Virginia, where she led teams researching Madison’s life, his role in shaping the U.S. Constitution, and the experiences of the enslaved community at the plantation. She previously spent thirteen years as Curator at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, guiding research and interpretation of the historic home, its collections, Jefferson’s family, and the enslaved people who lived and worked there.

Chew holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University, a master’s from the University of London, and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The program is free and open to the public. The Horry County Museum is located at 805 Main Street, Conway. For more information, call 843.915.5320 or email hcg.museum@horrycountysc.gov
