RALEIGH, N.C. — The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is now accepting proposals for the 2026 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, an annual initiative designed to strengthen the competitiveness of specialty crops across the state. Eligible organizations have until March 10 at 5 p.m. to submit applications.

The program, funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the state agriculture department, typically receives around $1.2 million each year to support approved projects. Specialty crops include a wide range of fruits, vegetables, nuts, nursery crops, and other products listed on the USDA’s official eligibility page.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said the program plays an important role in supporting one of the most diverse agricultural sectors in the country. “North Carolina farmers can grow just about anything, and specialty crops make up a significant part of our state’s $100 billion farm economy,” Troxler said. “We’re looking for strong proposals that help expand specialty crop production.”

The department will consider requests of up to $200,000 from nonprofits, commodity groups, government agencies, and colleges and universities. Funding cannot be used for projects that directly benefit a single business, organization, or individual.

Applicants may submit a draft proposal by Jan. 28 for optional feedback, though the department notes that reviews are not guaranteed and do not influence final funding decisions.

Grant guidelines and application materials are available at www.ncspecialtycrops.com/apply/. Questions may be directed to Jenni Keith at 919‑707‑3158 or jenni.keith@ncagr.gov.
