Southport becomes the next stop in a statewide arts initiative bringing 100 murals to 100 counties

Brunswick County, NC — A new public art installation is headed to downtown Southport as Brunswick County is set to become the 13th county featured in the PAINT NC: 100 Murals for 100 Counties project. The statewide initiative, led by artist Max Dowdle, aims to celebrate North Carolina’s communities through large‑scale, place‑based artwork.

Residents and visitors are invited to watch the mural’s creation on March 18 and 19, with live painting scheduled between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. around Franklin Square Gallery.

Dowdle will be joined by local visual artists representing several Brunswick County arts organizations, offering the public a chance to see the collaborative process unfold in real time.

The project arrives after two years of planning and coordination. Local arts leaders say the mural will add a vibrant new layer to Southport’s cultural landscape while highlighting the county’s growing commitment to public art.

The Brunswick Arts Council played a key role in bringing the project to the community, working closely with partners to secure Southport’s place in the statewide series. Additional details about the PAINT NC initiative can be found at the project link provided by organizers.
