From long-running family restaurants to modern walk-up shacks, River Road remains the heart of Calabash’s seafood identity.

River Road in Calabash has long been the center of the town’s seafood reputation, drawing generations of locals, day‑trippers, and beach visitors to a short stretch of waterfront known for its lightly breaded, quick‑fried coastal style. While the town has grown and the dining landscape has shifted, the cluster of seafood houses along River Road continues to define what many consider the original Calabash experience.

The lineup includes some of the oldest names in the community. Beck’s Restaurant, one of the town’s foundational seafood houses, remains known for its light, crisp breading and consistent platters that reflect the traditional Calabash method. Ella’s and Coleman’s, both long-established family operations, anchor the historic end of the strip and continue to draw diners who return year after year for familiar menus and large portions.

Captain Nance’s Seafood, located near the waterfront docks, offers a similar traditional approach with a focus on fried shrimp, oysters, flounder, and deviled crab. The restaurant’s proximity to the river and its long-running presence make it a frequent stop for visitors seeking the classic Calabash setting.

In recent years, newer concepts have added variety to the strip. Waterfront Seafood Shack, a small walk-up operation near the docks, has gained attention for its fresh, made-to-order plates and outdoor seating. Its emphasis on local catch and simple preparation offers a different take on the Calabash tradition while still fitting into the town’s seafood identity.

Despite the differences in style, the restaurants along River Road share several common threads: large seasonal crowds, fast-paced service, and menus built around fried seafood. Locals often note that the experience is as much a part of Calabash’s character as the food itself, with summer evenings bringing full parking lots, long lines, and the familiar rhythm of high-volume coastal dining.

As Calabash continues to grow, River Road remains the community’s most recognizable landmark.

The mix of historic seafood houses and newer additions keeps the strip rooted in tradition while offering visitors a range of ways to experience the town’s signature style.
