WHITEVILLE — A late‑night argument between a father and son at a Columbus County campground ended with a gunshot and an arrest, according to sheriff’s office warrants.

JARED CHANCE CARTER, 29, of 2839 Coastal Shores Road SW in Supply, was taken into custody after deputies were called to Lumber River Campground around midnight Saturday for a disturbance involving multiple people.

Warrants say Carter was fighting with his father, Alexander Carter, when he pulled out a firearm and fired a shot. Deputies noted that Carter was intoxicated and disruptive at the time. No injuries were reported, and investigators did not indicate that the round struck anyone or anything at the campground.

Carter was charged with:

  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Intoxicated and Disruptive Behavior
  • Carrying a Gun into an Assembly or Establishment

He was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center and later released on a $1,500 secured bond, according to jail records.

The sheriff’s office has not announced whether additional charges are being considered as the investigation continues.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
