Alton Young of Council, North Carolina, departed this life on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the age of 83 years old. He was born February 9, 1943, son of the late Henry and Christina Young. Alton was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Carolyn Young, on July 11, 1965. To this union God added five children and blessed them with 60 years of marriage. A love that lasted because of a choice to never give up on God or one another.
Alton was an iron worker by trade. Many years walking beams high in the air and completing large steel projects with friends was an enjoyment to him. Later in life he spent several years building piers at Lake Waccamaw with a great friend and nephew, Jimmy Wayne Young. After retirement, Alton spent his free time loving on his family, fishing and hunting with his grandsons, nephews, and best friend, Melton Freeman.
Allowing his faith in God and the prayers of his mother to guide him, Alton left a life of sin and accepted the Lord. He spent 50 years as a dedicated member of Mt. Sinai Holiness Church. Over the years he served as a sexton, Sunday school teacher, choir director, deacon and in his final years ruling elder. Alton was best known for sharing his love of Christ through singing. His ability to break out in spirit-led songs such as “Old Ship of Zion, It’s So Peaceful, and Come by Here Lord” led to the conviction of many hearts over the years.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years; three sons, Chris Young and wife Tammy of Council, Alton Theron Young and wife Beverly of Greensboro, and Jermie Young of Council; one daughter, Christina Jacobs and husband Felix of Council; a bonus son, Bradley Jacobs and wife Jessica of Council; one sister, Arlene Moore of Buckhead; one sister-in-law, Barbara Young of Council; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Alton was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Baby Boy Young; brothers, William Henry Young and wife Lucille, and David Young; sisters, Missouri Jacobs and husband Ed, Geneva Jacobs and husband Rufus; a brother-in-law James Vance Moore; and many other loved ones whom he cherished dearly.
His funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Mt. Sinai Holiness Church with Elder Michael Jacobs, Pastor Howard Jacobs, Pastor Zachary Jacobs, and Pastor Jerry Groves officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
Donations may be made in memory of Mr. Young to Mt. Sinai Holiness Church. A scholarship fund is being developed for future high school graduates.
