Wildfire Expands in Bladen County; Smoke Reaches Columbus

The North Carolina Forest Service reports that crews continue battling a wildfire near Rosindale Road and the Welches Creek Gamelands in Bladen County. As of Wednesday evening, the blaze had grown to approximately 425 acres with no containment, fueled by dry winds and parched vegetation.

Firefighters from Bladen and Columbus counties remain on scene alongside Forest Service personnel. Officials say heavy smoke has drifted across the region, with ash reported in Whiteville, Cerro Gordo, and Hallsboro. Residents are urged to avoid Rosindale Road and limit outdoor activity in smoky areas.

The Forest Service reminds the public that a statewide burn ban remains in effect. “Every one of these fires has been human-caused,” Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said Wednesday, noting that crews have responded to more than 100 wildfires statewide since late March.

Emergency managers expect containment efforts to continue through the week as weather conditions remain dry and gusty.
