The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging consumers to avoid buying GLP‑1 drugs and other substances marketed as “for research purposes only” or “not for human consumption.”

According to the agency, these products have not been reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing quality — meaning buyers have no assurance about what they contain or how they were made. Officials say using them can pose serious health risks to consumers and their families.

The FDA recently issued seven warning letters tied to more than 20 violative products being sold directly to the public. The agency says the companies involved were marketing unapproved or misbranded substances, including products that mimic prescription‑only GLP‑1 medications.

Federal regulators emphasized that legitimate GLP‑1 drugs — such as those prescribed for diabetes or weight management must meet strict FDA standards. Products sold outside that system, especially those labeled as research‑only, do not undergo any of those safeguards.
