“ClickFix” Scam Tricks Users into Running Malicious Code via Keyboard Shortcuts
A dangerous new “ClickFix” scam is bypassing security software by tricking users into manually infecting their own computers. Disguised as a standard “I’m not a robot” or Cloudflare verification page
The site claims a browser error has occurred and provides a “fix” involving a specific sequence of keyboard shortcuts. Users are instructed to press Windows + R, then CTRL + V, and finally Enter.
This sequence opens the Windows “Run” box and pastes a hidden PowerShell command that immediately downloads an “infostealer” virus. Because the user manually initiates the process, many antivirus programs fail to block the execution. Once active, the malware silently scrapes the browser for saved passwords, credit card numbers, and login cookies, giving hackers full access to sensitive accounts.
The golden rule for staying safe is simple: A legitimate security check will never ask you to use keyboard shortcuts or paste code to prove you are human. Genuine CAPTCHAs only require clicking a checkbox or identifying images. If a site demands you run a command to verify your identity, close the tab immediately to protect your data.
