SBI continues review; Parks & Recreation operations remain suspended

By BC News Staff Writer

The State Bureau of Investigation continues to review financial discrepancies identified within the City of Southport’s Parks & Recreation Department, with the case remaining active and without a projected completion date. The investigation began after a forensic accounting review initiated by the City uncovered irregularities requiring outside examination.

In response to the findings, the City placed four Parks & Recreation employees on paid administrative leave and closed all department facilities. All classes, events, and rentals remain suspended, and the City’s Before/After‑School Program is still on hold.

A program director resigned shortly after the investigation began. No additional personnel soythinformation has been released due to state privacy laws.

The City’s Community Relations Department continues to manage limited facility reservations to honor prior commitments. Major citywide events, including the Fourth of July Festival, are not expected to be affected.

The SBI has confirmed the investigation is ongoing and has not released further details, noting that financial cases typically require extensive document review.
