BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — Eight years have passed since the killing of North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Kevin Keith Conner. The man charged in his death had pleaded guilty and received a life sentence in Brunswick County Superior Court.
In 2024 Chauncy Askew entered a guilty plea to the murder of Trooper Conner, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on U.S. 701 near Whiteville on October 17, 2018. Conner, an 11‑year veteran of the Patrol, was widely respected across Columbus County and the region.
Under the plea agreement, Askew received the maximum penalty allowed — life in prison.

Trooper Conner’s family and dear friends were joined in unity by members of the Highway Patrol during the sentencing, closing a long and painful chapter for those who have carried his memory forward since 2018.
The Patrol has continued to honor Trooper Conner annually, and the sentencing provides long‑awaited resolution while reaffirming the agency’s commitment to supporting his family.
