MLK Week Events Planned Across Brunswick and Columbus Counties

Communities throughout Brunswick and Columbus counties will host a full week of events honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. From January 17–22, residents can take part in marches, worship services, educational programs, and community discussions celebrating Dr. King’s message of justice, unity, and service.

Brunswick County Events

Shallotte – Interfaith Prayer Service & Luncheon

Monday, Jan. 19 • Noon–2 p.m. Camp United Methodist Church, 4807 Main Street

  • Interfaith prayer service bringing together clergy, community leaders, and residents
  • Guest speaker Captain Timothy T. Daniels
  • Community luncheon immediately following the program

Southport – MLK Celebration Weekend

Southport will host two days of events honoring Dr. King.

Sunday, Jan. 18

  • 3 p.m. – Memorial March Begins at the Southport Fire Station, 1011 N. Howe Street
  • 3:45 p.m. – Program Immediately following the march

Monday, Jan. 19

  • 8 a.m. – Round Table Breakfast & Walter Welsh Award Presentation Murrow Hall, Trinity United Methodist Church (Atlantic & Nash Streets) For tickets or information, contact MLK Celebration Chair Rhonda Davis at mlkcsnc@gmail.com.

Columbus County Events

Friday, Jan. 17 – Whiteville MLK Walk & Service

10 a.m. • Vineland Station, 701 S. Madison St., Whiteville

  • Annual MLK Walk and Service hosted by the Whiteville Alumni Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
  • Participants will gather at Vineland Station for a community walk honoring Dr. King’s legacy of service.

Saturday, Jan. 18 – MLK Walk & Memorial Service

10 a.m. • Vineland Station → Columbus County Courthouse

  • Annual countywide MLK Walk beginning at Vineland Station
  • Memorial service with music and guest speakers at the courthouse

Saturday, Jan. 18 – Film Screening & Symposium at SCC

6 p.m. • Southeastern Community College

  • Screening of “Sometimes I Feel Like I Am Almost Home”
  • Symposium and story‑work activity led by Dr. Bertrice Berry
  • Reception to conclude the evening

Sunday, Jan. 19 – Ecumenical Service

3 p.m. • St. Mark AME Zion Church

  • Community‑wide worship service featuring local churches honoring Dr. King

Monday, Jan. 19 – Chadbourn MLK Walk & Program

9 a.m. Walk • 10 a.m. Program

  • Annual walk hosted by the Chadbourn Fellowship Alliance
  • Program at First Missionary Baptist Church following the walk

Tuesday, Jan. 20 – SCC MLK Program

11 a.m. • SCC Auditorium

  • Guest speaker Marcus Bass Chair of the Governor’s MLK Commission and political advocacy director for the N.C. NAACP

Wednesday, Jan. 21 – SCC Day of Service

11 a.m. • Facts of Life Church, Whiteville

  • Service activities led by students and community members in honor of Dr. King’s commitment to community uplift

Thursday, Jan. 22 – Courageous Conversations

6 p.m. • First Presbyterian Church, Whiteville

  • Community dialogue event focused on unity, understanding, and continuing Dr. King’s work
