Iris Rae King

Iris Rae King, 92, of Apex, NC died Monday January 5, 2026.

Iris was born in Brunswick County, NC on August 30, 1933, to the late Melton Evans and Bertha Phelps Evans.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased in death by her husband of seventy-three years Dudley Foster King, Jr. and a daughter Bettie Nadeen King.

Iris was a 1951 graduate of Norview High School in Norfolk, NC. She graduated from Campbell College in 1952 where she played basketball. She was a 1959 graduate of the College of William and Mary (Norfolk Campus) with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She held a Master of Science in Education degree 1979 from Old Dominion University.

Iris worked for many years in public education teaching kindergarten, second and 3 grade in both Norfolk and Virginia Beach Public Schools. She completed her teaching career, teaching kindergarten, at Woodstock Elementary, Virginia Beach, retiring in 1994.

Iris returned to retire in Brunswick County in 2000. During her retirement she was active in Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving is her son Melton King (Serena), sister-in-law Bettie Formyduval, two grandchildren Ethan King (Laura) and Casey Hunter (Will) and three great-grandchildren Jeremiah James “JJ” Hunter, Lottie King, Theodore “Theo” Hunter. Niece’s Geneice McCullen, Mary Gore, and Nephew Adam Formyduval.

Services will be conducted on Saturday, January 10, 2026, with visitation at 1:00 pm followed by the funeral at 2:00pm at Calvary Baptist Church Shallotte, NC. Burial will follow in Brunswick Memorial Gardens in Shallotte.

The family wishes to thank all the staff at Spring Arbor of Cary for their compassion and care for Mom. Also, we want to thank her healthcare teams from Carolina Neighbors (Joyce and team), Hallmark Homecare (Denita, Sade, and Marisa), Amedisys Hospice (Holly, Monica, and Gwen), and Eventus Health (Mary Beth and team).
