Public‑art murals highlight native pollinators and remain one of the city’s top‑rated attractions
Whiteville, NC — Downtown Whiteville is home to the Butterfly Trail, a public‑art feature made up of large, hand‑painted butterfly murals scattered across Main Street and Madison Street. The trail includes installations at 135 E. Main Street, 427 S. Madison Street beside the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville, and 822 S. Madison Street on the Columbus County Arts Council building. Additional butterfly artwork has appeared at the Whiteville Farmers Market, where families can also pick up butterfly‑themed coloring sheets and educational materials.
The Butterfly Trail itself is a relatively new addition to the city. The project took shape in early 2021, beginning with a series of native‑butterfly murals created by the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville.
Those first installations sparked a broader community effort, and by spring 2021 the Whiteville Rotary Club had commissioned three additional murals to form a walkable downtown trail. What began as a small science‑and‑art initiative quickly grew into a feature that highlights local pollinators while encouraging residents and visitors to explore the city on foot.
Today, the murals serve both as public art and as an informal walking tour that connects the museum, local businesses, and community gathering spots. Each mural showcases a different butterfly species native to North Carolina, reinforcing the trail’s original purpose of blending art, education, and conservation.
With a 5‑star Google review as one of the top tourist attractions in Whiteville, the Butterfly Trail continues to draw steady interest from visitors. At this time, neither the City of Whiteville nor the NC Museum of Natural Sciences has announced plans to expand the Butterfly Trail, and the existing murals remain the full scope of the project.
