ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper was killed early Sunday morning after his patrol vehicle ran off the roadway and overturned along NC Highway 130, according to information released by the agency.

Master Trooper Stien Davis Jr., assigned to Troop B, District 7 in Robeson County, was on duty shortly after midnight when he lost control of his patrol vehicle. The cruiser left the roadway and overturned in a swampy area beside the highway. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a message to Highway Patrol personnel, Colonel Freddy Johnson Jr. confirmed the loss and said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Johnson noted that Davis was traveling in his assigned patrol vehicle at the time of the collision and that early reports indicate no other vehicles were involved.

Davis was a graduate of the 141st Basic Patrol School and had served the state and the Robeson County region “with distinction,” Johnson said. The Highway Patrol will release additional details, including arrangements for a celebration of life ceremony, as they become available.

The agency has not released further information about the circumstances leading up to the crash.

This is a developing story.
