Sheriff’s Office Highlights Accreditation Standards and Policy Updates

BRUNSWICK COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICE SEAL

Routine policy reviews reinforce safety, accountability, and professional excellence

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is reaffirming its commitment to professional, accountable policing as it moves through the 2026 accreditation review cycle. The agency holds national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and is also accredited through the North Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation program — an honor it was the first in the state to achieve.

Accreditation requires policies to meet nationally recognized benchmarks for safety, accountability, and risk reduction. Routine policy evaluation is a normal and expected part of modern law enforcement, ensuring deputies operate with clear, current guidance that reflects evolving best practices.

Recent updates to the agency’s emergency response policy place added emphasis on:
• Complete stops at stop signs and red lights during emergency responses
• Reduced speed and increased caution at intersections and yield areas
• Strict procedures around school buses and school zones
• Clear expectations that emergency operations continue only when they can be conducted safely and with due regard for all persons

These updates reflect the Sheriff’s Office’s ongoing commitment to thoughtful leadership, continuous improvement, and responsible policing.

Sheriff Brian Chism emphasizes transparent leadership, professional training, and maintaining standards that meet or exceed both state and national accreditation requirements. The agency’s focus continues to be protecting life, promoting safety, and serving Brunswick County with integrity and professionalism.
