SHALLOTTE, NC
Feb. 9, 2026
The Town of Shallotte has reported a small discharge of untreated wastewater from a force main located at 516 Lightwood Lane, according to a notice issued Monday.
Town officials say less than 100 gallons of wastewater were released during the incident, which occurred on the morning of February 9 and lasted under one hour. All visible wastewater was recovered at the site.
Because the location is near surface waters, the town pulled water samples from the Shallotte River out of an abundance of caution. Those samples have been sent for laboratory testing.
The town reports that the broken line was immediately repaired to prevent any further discharge.
The notice was issued in accordance with North Carolina General Statutes, Article 21, Chapter 143.215.1C, which requires public notification when untreated wastewater reaches surface waters or when a discharge of 1,000 gallons or more occurs.
The NC Department of Water Quality was notified of the event on February 9 and is reviewing the matter.
