Whiteville Teen Charged in Series of Brush Fires

Deputies, forestry officers investigating multiple roadside fire scenes

Whiteville NC — A Whiteville teenager charged in connection with several brush and grass fires reported across rural Columbus County, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

Tanner Reed Sykes, 19, of 4756 Gore Trailer Road, was arrested January 30. 2025 on multiple counts of setting fire to grass, brushland, or woodland. Each charge carries a $500 secured bond.

The charges involve fires discovered near Jim Jolly Road, M.M. Ray Road, Walter Todd Road, and Furnie Hammond Road. The North Carolina Forestry Service is listed as the complainant.

Sykes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
