Brunswick County Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Winter Storm GiannaNo curfews in effect as officials activate resources and monitor storm impacts

BOLIVIA, NC – Brunswick County Chairman Mike Forte has issued a state of emergency effective Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. due to the imminent threats posed by Winter Storm Gianna.
A state of emergency is an official declaration that unusual conditions require special measures to protect people and property. It provides local officials with additional authority to respond quickly and allocate resources as needed.
This proclamation authorizes the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office to control ingress and egress and regulate the movement of persons within roadways when necessary for public safety. It does not establish any curfews.
The proclamation also does not trigger the limitations on weapons outlined in North Carolina General Statute 14‑288.7, nor does it impose any restrictions on the consumption, transportation, sale, or purchase of alcoholic beverages.
The proclamation may be amended if additional protective measures become necessary.
The Brunswick County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is currently operating at Level 2 – Partial Activation, with representatives from core public safety agencies, water and sewer utilities, social services, and other essential personnel coordinating services, maintaining communications with local and state partners, and addressing needs before and during the storm.
Essential Brunswick County team members are working at various locations countywide to continue providing public safety, emergency medical response, utility services, and communications support throughout the weekend.
