As summer winds down, administrators focus on keeping classrooms distraction‑free
WHITEVILLE, NC — As summer vacation comes to an end and hallways prepare to fill once again with students, Whiteville High School is tightening its phone and personal device policy to ensure the new year begins with strong academic focus. Administrators say the updated rules are designed to protect instructional time and maintain the momentum students built last year.
The policy requires students to secure all personal electronic devices upon entering each classroom. Items such as cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, personal laptops, wireless earbuds, and similar devices must be placed in designated lock boxes or secure storage areas. They remain there for the entire class period and may not be used during class changes or lunch.
School‑issued Chromebooks will continue to serve as the primary instructional technology, used only as directed by teachers.
School leaders emphasize that the policy is meant to support learning, not limit communication. Families who need to reach a student during the school day can contact the main office, and students who need to reach home for urgent matters may do the same.
Noncompliance will result in consequences outlined in the Whiteville High School Code of Conduct, available through the Student/Parent Handbook on the school’s website.
With classrooms soon returning to full capacity, administrators believe the strengthened device policy will help maintain a focused, engaged learning environment from day one.
