OAK ISLAND, NC — A Rip Current Statement from the National Weather Service in Wilmington is in effect for Coastal Brunswick County through Sunday evening, warning of dangerous rip currents along area beaches. The advisory notes that hazardous surf conditions are expected through midnight.
The Town of Oak Island’s Beach Safety Division has issued a RED FLAG for Sunday, overriding the National Weather Service’s flag forecast based on hazardous conditions observed locally.
Under a red‑flag advisory, no safe water depth is identified and ocean swimming is not permitted.
According to the National Weather Service, rip currents can sweep even experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Beach Safety officials urge visitors to remain out of the ocean until conditions improve. The beach itself remains open.
Safety guidance from the National Weather Service advises swimmers to stay near a lifeguard, avoid swimming against the current, and float or swim parallel to the shoreline if caught in a rip current. Those unable to escape should face the shore and call or wave for help.
