OAK ISLAND, NC — Oak Island will conduct townwide mosquito‑control fogging this week as officials respond to what they describe as a growing skeeter population across the island and mainland. Public Works crews plan to begin fogging at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30, weather permitting.
The town divides its mosquito‑management routes into four zones. Crews will fog Zones 1 and 2 on Wednesday, covering all neighborhoods west of East 40th Street. Zones 3 and 4 will follow on Thursday, covering all areas east of East 41st Street as well as the mainland.
The town notes that wind, rain, or other weather conditions may delay or reschedule operations.
Officials ask residents to avoid approaching the mosquito‑control vehicle while fogging is underway. The fog typically dissipates within 5 to 30 minutes. Treatments are conducted under guidance from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services and the North Carolina Pesticide Board.
Registered beekeepers may request exemptions through the state Apiary Program.
The town encourages residents to remove standing water around homes to help reduce breeding sites, noting that municipal fogging provides short‑term relief but does not replace routine prevention.
The notice comes as coastal communities continue to report higher‑than‑normal mosquito activity during midsummer. State researchers have documented strong populations of tiger mosquitoes in urban and coastal environments, with some areas showing reduced effectiveness of common backyard sprays. Town officials say coordinated fogging helps reduce adult mosquito numbers during peak nuisance periods.
