US 17 Gas Leak Traced to Line Connection at Winnabow Fire Department

Winnabow, NC — Piedmont Natural Gas has confirmed that the gas leak which shut down US 17 in Winnabow originated at a connection point where the main gas line meets the service line supplying the Winnabow Fire Department.

Responders say the failure at that junction released gas near the roadway, prompting an immediate closure of US 17 in both directions.

The detour, while inconvenient for drivers, was implemented strictly for safety. Motorists experienced slower travel and longer arrival times as traffic was routed around the hazard zone until crews could secure the line.

The Winnabow Fire Department, Brunswick County emergency crews, and Piedmont technicians remained on scene through the response, isolating the affected section and stopping the leak. No injuries were reported, and officials say the compromised connection was shut off once identified.

Traffic resumed after crews confirmed conditions were safe, and Piedmont Natural Gas continues inspecting the connection point and surrounding infrastructure.
