Amid exceptional drought, officials introduce a new, once-a-week window for automated lawn and landscape irrigation to manage public water demand.
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC — As the region continues to battle exceptional drought conditions, Brunswick County remains under a Stage 3 Water Shortage Warning. While the county is maintaining its mandatory conservation measures, officials announced an update today, July 17, 2026, to allow for a limited, once-a-week schedule for automated irrigation systems.
The revised policy permits residential and commercial customers to operate automated sprinklers including spray and drip irrigation, provided they use less than one inch of water per week.
To ensure stability across the public water system, use is restricted to a consecutive eight-hour window between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. on designated days.
Odd-Numbered Addresses (and non-addressed facilities): Permitted to irrigate from 8:00 p.m. Tuesday until 4:00 a.m Wednesday.
Even-Numbered Addresses: Permitted to irrigate from 8:00 p.m. Friday until 4:00 a.m. Saturday.
This mandate applies to all residential and commercial lawns, landscaping, athletic fields, and golf courses that do not utilize private groundwater wells or reclaimed water.
County officials stress that adherence to these guidelines is vital to managing water capacity during this period of extreme dryness. A comprehensive list of the Stage 3 mandatory adjustments, specific exemptions, and potential penalties is available at BrunswickCountyNC.gov/WaterWise.
