Four Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K9s Black, Ronin, Pepper, and Jax will soon receive new bullet and stab resistant vests through a donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vests were sponsored by Sherri Widlund of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in honor of her Aunt Marge Wright.
Vested Interest in K9s is a national nonprofit that equips working dogs with custom fitted NIJ‑certified protective vests at no cost to agencies. Since 2009, the organization has donated more than 6,348 vests nationwide.
Meet the K9s
- K9 Black — A German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix partnered with Deputy Quisto Moore. Certified in explosive detection and trailing, Black is known for his strong work ethic, playful personality, and signature “hug.”
- K9 Ronin — Partnered with Deputy Michael Camastro, Ronin is trained in trailing and narcotics detection. High‑energy and focused, he enjoys beach time when off duty.
- K9 Pepper — A tracking and trailing bloodhound partnered with Master Deputy Robin Forbes. Pepper joined the unit in 2025 and has completed advanced training across multiple states.
- K9 Jax — A 9‑year‑old Belgian Malinois partnered with Deputy Philip Horner. Certified in narcotics detection, tracking, evidence searches, and apprehension, Jax recently completed 240 hours of advanced handler training.
Brunswick County Sheriff Brian Chism said, “The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is sincerely grateful to Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and to sponsor Sherri Widlund for this generous donation. This protective equipment provides critical safety for our K9s, who faithfully serve and protect our community each day.”
