Shallotte, NC — Fire crews worked through the night in near‑100‑degree heat and wind gusts around 30 miles per hour as they continued battling a wildfire near Old Georgetown Road and Hale Swamp Road. With little to no rain in recent days, extremely dry conditions helped fuel fire activity. Smoke drifted across large portions of Brunswick County, with heavy smoke reported as far as the west end of Oak Island.
Wildfire Impacts and Response
Individuals should continue to avoid the affected area so fire crews and first responders can work safely.
The wildfire remains estimated 300 acres. The NC Forest Service reports ~60% containment; crews are still building and reinforcing lines, and containment levels may shift with weather and fire behavior. Heavy smoke is expected to linger and may reduce visibility.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The Brunswick County Fire Marshal’s Office, State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are documenting property losses. Known losses include a commercial self‑storage building, a residential storage building, and several commercial work trucks and pieces of heavy equipment.
No new evacuation orders have been issued. Homes received door‑to‑door notices from law enforcement. A temporary American Red Cross shelter opened late last night, July 10, at the BSRI Brunswick Center at Shallotte, the shelter has since closed. The facility remains on standby if conditions change.
Road closures remain unchanged. Village Point Road is closed, along with the Bricklanding roundabout for southbound traffic. Bay Road is closed at Todd Road, and Todd Road is closed northbound from Bricklanding to Village Point Road. Hale Swamp Road is closed before Old Georgetown Road, and Old Georgetown Road is closed at Ocean Isle Beach Road.
Drivers should avoid the area and use alternate routes.
Residents outside the affected area are asked to stay clear so firefighters and emergency crews can work safely. More updates will be provided as conditions change.
