Heat Advisory Continues in Horry County as Emergency Calls Rise

Dangerous heat prompts increased medical responses; cooling centers open in Conway and Loris

HORRY COUNTY, SC — A National Weather Service Heat Advisory remains in effect for Horry County as heat indices climb into the 105–110 degree range, prompting a rise in heat‑related emergency calls and the activation of public cooling centers.

Horry County Fire Rescue reports a noticeable increase in heat‑stress and heat‑exhaustion calls over the past two days. Crews have responded to incidents at outdoor job sites, beach access points, parking areas, and residences without adequate cooling. Many patients showed symptoms including dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and dehydration.

The advisory covers both inland and coastal communities, including Conway, Loris, Aynor, Carolina Forest, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, and Socastee. The combination of high temperatures, elevated humidity, and light winds has created conditions where the body cannot cool itself effectively, increasing the risk of heat‑related illness.

To assist residents without reliable air conditioning, Horry County has opened two cooling centers:

  • Conway Library, 801 Main Street
  • Loris Library, 4316 Main Street

Both facilities offer air‑conditioned space, seating, restrooms, and access to drinking water. They follow standard library operating hours, with the county noting that extended hours may be considered if dangerous heat persists. The centers are open to the public with no ID or registration required.

Emergency officials urge residents and visitors to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take breaks in air‑conditioned spaces. Individuals showing signs of heat stroke, including confusion, fainting, or hot, dry skin should receive immediate medical attention.

With the weekend events expected to draw large crowds to beaches and outdoor venues, Horry County agencies have increased staffing and coordinated response plans to manage anticipated call volume.
