Community Staple Set to Close March 1 as Lease Comes to an End
By BC News Staff Writer
LELAND, N.C. — The Family Dollar in the Clairmont Shopping Center will close on March 1, ending more than four decades in the heart of Leland. The decision follows the expiration of the store’s lease and a corporate choice not to renew.
The location at 112 Village Road NE, Clairmont Shopping Center opened in 1981 in the Piggly Wiggly–anchored plaza. It has long served nearby neighborhoods as a convenient stop for everyday essentials. Its departure marks the end of a familiar presence for many longtime residents.
Once the store closes, the nearest Family Dollar for Leland shoppers will be at 1411 Lanvale Road NE, about a 10‑minute drive from the Village Road site. Another option sits across the bridge in Wilmington at 1013 Market Street.
The Village Road store leaves behind a noticeable gap in the Clairmont Shopping Center. For many households, it offered quick access to low‑cost goods without crossing town or heading into Wilmington.
Family Dollar will continue to operate four stores in Brunswick County, along with additional locations in neighboring New Hanover County.
