Horry County Sheriff’s Office: Wanted Suspect Apprehended After Assaulting Deputy

C. Rumsey (HCSO)

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — An Horry County Sheriff’s deputy was injured during an intense struggle while attempting to execute an outstanding bench warrant on Monday, June 29, 2026.

The incident unfolded as deputies were conducting surveillance on 54-year-old Charles Rumsey. Upon spotting Rumsey exiting a residence on 31st Avenue North, the deputy attempted to initiate an arrest. Rumsey ignored commands and fled the scene on foot, prompting a pursuit.

The foot chase concluded in a nearby T-Mobile parking lot, where the deputy successfully engaged the suspect. During the apprehension, the situation escalated as Rumsey became combative and actively resisted arrest. Two bystanders, witnessing the struggle, stepped in to assist the deputy in restraining the suspect until additional law enforcement and emergency medical services arrived.

Both the deputy and Rumsey were treated for minor injuries following the altercation. Rumsey was taken into custody to face his original bench warrant for drug-related charges and is now facing an additional charge of Assaulting an Officer.

In a statement following the event, the Horry County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude toward the citizens who intervened, noting: “We’re especially thankful for the brave bystanders who jumped in as back up and that our deputy is okay. There is no such thing as a routine warrant or paper service.”
