Return of the Wild Comes to Whiteville

Dr. Roland Kays brings his coast‑to‑coast wildlife research to the Whiteville museum July 18.

Whiteville, NC — The NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville will host a special presentation on July 18 from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., featuring nationally recognized zoologist and research professor Dr. Roland Kays. Known for his work tracking wildlife across the globe, Dr. Kays leads the Biodiversity Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and serves as a research professor at NC State University. His research blends high‑tech tools such as GPS collars and camera traps with traditional fieldwork to understand how mammals move, adapt, and survive in changing environments. Before joining the museum, he spent more than a decade as Curator of Mammals at the New York State Museum and has since become a National Geographic Explorer and frequent presenter for science networks including Nat Geo, Smithsonian Channel, and Science Channel.

During his Whiteville program, Return of the Wild, Dr. Kays will share stories, video, and findings from his recent work retracing the historic Lewis and Clark trail with a team of biologists from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and the Smithsonian.

The group followed the route from Pittsburgh to the Pacific, documenting how North America’s wildlife has changed over the 220 years since the original Corps of Discovery. His presentation highlights what species have disappeared, what has returned, and what two and a half centuries of American history reveal about the future of wildlife across the continent.

This program is open to all ages, and families are welcome. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to explore the museum and view specimens representing animals encountered along the expedition. Dr. Kays will be available after the presentation to answer questions about the journey and his broader research.

This free public event will be held at the museum’s Whiteville branch at 415 South Madison Street. No registration is required. For more information, call the museum at 910.788.5100
