Public Safety Announcement
Horry County, SC — Horry County Fire Rescue is urging motorists to use caution and remain attentive when approaching emergency vehicles, emphasizing that roadway blockages and lane closures are never done unnecessarily.
According to the department, crews respond to hundreds of emergencies across the county each day often alongside law enforcement and other public safety partners to treat injuries, transport patients, extinguish fires, mitigate hazards, and protect the public. Many of these responses require the use of lights and sirens to reach emergencies as quickly and safely as possible.
Drivers are asked to carefully and slowly move to the right when emergency vehicles are approaching from the front or rear. When crews are already on scene with lights activated, motorists should proceed cautiously through the area, following any instructions provided by first responders or posted signage.
The department stresses that filming or photographing emergency scenes from a moving vehicle is extremely dangerous and diverts attention from the roadway, putting both responders and other drivers at risk. No social media post, they note, is worth endangering lives.
HCFR acknowledges that emergency responses can slow traffic but says the safety of first responders and the individuals they are assisting must remain the top priority. Lanes will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.
