OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC — The Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department has received a Class 3 rating following its recent Fire Suppression Rating Survey conducted by the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM).

The inspection, part of the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS), evaluates departments on staffing levels, equipment, maintenance, communications, and water supply. Ratings range from 1 (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certified department), with most rural departments typically falling into the 9S category. A lower numerical rating indicates stronger readiness and can directly influence property insurance costs for residents within the district.

Both the Ocean Isle Beach Municipal and Ocean Isle Beach Rural fire districts earned a Class 3 rating, effective October 1, 2026.

State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor commended Interim Chief  Robert L. Prevatt Jr. and the department for their dedication and professionalism.

“It was the pleasure of my staff to work with you and members of your staff during the recent survey of your department,” Taylor said. “Working together, we can continue to make North Carolina a safer place to live and work.”

Taylor also praised the department’s commitment to community safety, noting that the hard work of Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department personnel and cooperation with local officials continue to make the area safer for residents and visitors alike.

The OSFM routinely inspects departments statewide to ensure consistent standards and provide fire‑protection ratings used by insurance providers. These ratings help recognize departments that maintain high performance and readiness across North Carolina.
