Renewal keeps commercial assessment in place for cleaning, events and revitalization projects

Myrtle Beach, SC — Myrtle Beach City Council has renewed the Downtown Municipal Improvement District, continuing a special assessment zone that funds cleaning, marketing and revitalization efforts across the city’s core tourism and business areas. The district spans from 21st Avenue North to 11th Avenue South, including Broadway Street and the Arts and Innovation District. It was originally established in May 2022.
The MID requires commercial property owners within the district to pay an additional annual assessment dedicated solely to downtown improvements.
The revenue supports programs such as the Gold Caps Ambassador team, special events, marketing initiatives, planning work and long‑term revitalization projects. The district provides roughly half of the operating budget for the Myrtle Beach Downtown Alliance.
The assessment applies only to commercial parcels. A commercial property valued at $1 million would pay about $600 per year. Owner‑occupied residential homes are not included.
State law requires all MID‑generated funds to remain within the district or be used for projects that directly support it. City officials say the continued goal is to maintain a cleaner, safer and more active downtown environment for businesses, residents and visitors.
