Oak Island Issues RED FLAG Warning After Hazardous Surf Observed

"Red Skies at Night, Sailors Delight" -- But RED FLAGS on the BEACH - TAKE WARNING

OAK ISLAND, NC — June 23, 2026

The Town of Oak Island has raised its Beach Warning Flag to RED FLAG, effective immediately and remaining in place for the rest of Tuesday. The upgrade was issued after the Beach Safety Division observed hazardous surf conditions along the shoreline.

Town officials note that this action overrides the National Weather Service’s current flag forecast, based on real‑time conditions identified on the beach.

A RED FLAG indicates a high risk of rip currents and rough surf, with no safe water depth anywhere in the ocean. The beach itself remains open, but officials urge visitors to stay out of the water and avoid all ocean swimming and in‑water activity until conditions improve.
