State testing shows enterococci levels above safety standards at Cottage Creek site

SOUTHPORT, NC — State environmental officials issued a swimming advisory Thursday for a sound‑side site in Brunswick County after routine testing detected elevated enterococci bacteria.

The advisory applies to the public kayak launch in Cottage Creek at the end of W. West Street in Southport.

Water samples collected on June 9 and June 10 showed bacteria concentrations above the state and EPA action level of 104 enterococci per 100 milliliters for Tier 2 non‑daily use sites, which are classified based on recreational frequency.

The advisory does not close the waterway, but the public is urged to avoid swimming or wading until follow‑up testing confirms bacteria levels have returned to acceptable standards.
