Brunswick Community College Restores Portions of EMS Program After Sudden Suspension

State regulators approve limited restart as BCC works to rebuild leadership and meet accreditation requirements

Bolivia, NC — Brunswick Community College has resumed several entry‑level and continuing‑education EMS courses following last month’s abrupt suspension that left students, instructors, and local first responders scrambling for answers.

The North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services confirmed it has authorized the college to restart Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and local continuing‑education classes. These programs do not require the additional national accreditation needed for advanced‑level EMS instruction.

The partial reinstatement comes after the state accepted BCC’s request for a new EMS Program Director, a position required under North Carolina rules to operate any EMS program. The college has not publicly explained why it declined to renew the contract of former director Jerome “Chip” Munna, whose departure triggered the shutdown.

Advanced EMT (AEMT) and Paramedic programs remain suspended. Those courses require accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), and the state must be notified once the college meets those standards. Until then, students enrolled in advanced tracks remain unable to continue coursework.

The sudden pause in May disrupted dozens of students, including those preparing for summer classes and others nearing completion of certification requirements. Local fire and EMS agencies that rely on BCC for continuing education also faced uncertainty during the suspension.

College officials have not released a timeline for restoring the advanced‑level programs but say they are working with state regulators to meet all requirements.
