Lake Waccamaw pharmacist honored statewide for service at home and lifesaving work in West Africa.

One of Columbus County’s own, Amy Sessions of Baldwin Woods Pharmacy, has been named Community Care Pharmacist of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists, recognizing her leadership in patient care and her deep commitment to community health.

Sessions, a longtime resident of Lake Waccamaw, is known locally for her steady presence behind the counter and her dedication to helping patients navigate medications, chronic conditions, and everyday health needs.

But her impact reaches far beyond Columbus County.

Each year, Sessions travels to Sierra Leone with Mission of Hope: Rotifunk, where she provides medical care to infants, children, and pregnant women in one of the most underserved regions of West Africa.

Her work includes medication management, maternal‑health support, and hands‑on care in clinics that often operate with limited supplies and overwhelming need.

Colleagues say her service reflects “a heart for people, whether they’re across the counter or across the world.”

Amy Sessions has been recognized as a BC News Community Hero for her dedication to local patient care and her annual volunteer medical work in Sierra Leone.
