COLUMBUS COUNTY SEAL

Position offers $129K–$159K salary range; applications now accepted through county HR portal

Columbus County, NC — Columbus County Government has officially opened its search for a new County Manager, inviting qualified applicants to apply for one of the county’s most critical leadership roles. The position serves as the Chief Administrative Officer for Columbus County and reports directly to the Board of Commissioners.

The vacancy follows County Manager Eddie Madden’s decision to depart the role. Madden notified the county of his planned exit and was subsequently rehired by the Town of Elizabethtown to return as its Town Manager. His acceptance of that position created the opening now needing to be filled.

According to the county’s published job description, the County Manager is responsible for overseeing all county departments, administering day‑to‑day operations, and ensuring that county policies, ordinances, and regulations are properly executed. The role requires a high degree of independence, initiative, and professional judgment, as the manager coordinates the work of department heads and guides long‑ and short‑term planning efforts.

The position carries a salary range of $129,000 to $159,000, reflecting the scope of responsibility that includes budget development, financial oversight, capital planning, and strategic program implementation. The County Manager is also tasked with maintaining communication between the Board of Commissioners and the public, responding to inquiries, and representing the county at meetings and community functions.

The North Carolina Association of County Commissioners also lists the vacancy, reiterating the role’s emphasis on professional management, policy execution, and leadership across all county departments. The County Manager “serves at the pleasure of the Board of Commissioners” and is evaluated based on results achieved.
