City reports no violations and stable results across lead, copper, and disinfection byproducts.
Whiteville, NC — The City of Whiteville recently published its 2025 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, confirming the system met all state and federal standards with no violations during the year. The city draws drinking water from five deep wells tapping the Black Creek and Pee Dee aquifers at locations across town, including East Hay Street, Nolan Avenue, Legion Drive, Pleasant Plains Church Road, and West Lewis Street.
Lead and copper sampling from July 2023 showed lead at 9 ppb (below the 15 ppb action level) and copper at 0.031 ppm, with one site exceeding the lead action level. The city notes that lead typically comes from household plumbing and encourages residents to flush taps before use. Service line inventories are available by contacting Nathan Guyton at (910) 642‑5818.
Disinfection byproducts remained well below federal limits, with TTHMs at 40.2 ppb (MCL: 80) and HAA5 at 7.7 ppb (MCL: 60). Chlorine averaged 1.45 ppm, and fluoride measured 1.4 ppm, both within allowable ranges. Nitrate, uranium, and E. coli were not detected.
Unregulated contaminant monitoring found lithium between 7.1 and 12.1 ppb. Secondary standards showed low levels of iron and manganese, sodium at 9.6 ppm, and pH within the acceptable range.
A state Source Water Assessment rated most wells moderate susceptibility, with one rated lower. The city encourages residents to help protect groundwater through proper disposal of chemicals and household waste.
