WHITEVILLE — A Lumberton man is facing larceny charges after deputies linked him to a theft at a Dollar General store on James B. White Highway Wednesday afternoon.
The incident, reported at 4:00 p.m. at Dollar General #17617, involved a suspect who stole 10 T‑shirts valued at $120, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office incident log. The responding deputy documented the suspect only as a Black male, with no age or identifying information provided at the time.
Just hours later, at 10:08 p.m., deputies arrested Terrell Lamont Gilchrist, 35, of Lumberton, on misdemeanor larceny along with multiple felony property‑crime charges. Gilchrist was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center under ID #97298.
Investigators say the timing and nature of the charges strongly connect Gilchrist to the Dollar General theft. He was the only individual booked that night on fresh larceny charges, and his arrest occurred within six hours of the incident.
Gilchrist faces the following charges:
- Misdemeanor Larceny
- Three felony counts of Larceny – Remove/Destroy/Deactivate Component
- Additional misdemeanor larceny count
- Charges spanning Columbus and Robeson counties
His secured bonds total more than $40,000.
All individuals listed are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Charges and case statuses may change as investigations and court proceedings continue.
