Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Urges Residents to Prepare Ahead of 2026 Hurricane Season

2026 Hurricane Season

COLUMBUS COUNTY — With the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season less than a month away, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to begin preparing now, regardless of early forecasts calling for an average or slightly below‑normal year.

The season runs June 1 through November 30.

Early outlooks from NC State University predict 12 to 15 named storms, including six to nine hurricanes and two to three major hurricanes. Colorado State University’s forecast echoes the message that even quieter seasons can still produce dangerous storms.

Local officials say that’s a lesson Columbus County knows well.

Flooding, power outages, road closures, and property damage can occur even when a storm isn’t classified as historic. Sheriff Bill Rogers said preparation should be a yearly habit, not something done only when a storm is approaching.

“Columbus County has seen the damage storms can bring, and the best time to prepare is before there is a threat on the radar,” Rogers said. “Preparedness saves time, reduces panic, and most importantly, helps protect lives.”

The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging families to take several steps now:

  • Review and update emergency plans
  • Build or restock emergency supply kits
  • Ensure flashlights, batteries, medications, water, and non‑perishable food are on hand
  • Keep important documents in a safe, accessible location
  • Check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those with medical needs
  • Make plans for pets and livestock
  • Know evacuation routes and rely on trusted information sources

The Sheriff’s Office says it will continue coordinating with emergency management and local agencies throughout the season to keep residents informed.

Officials stress that waiting until a storm forms is too late.

Prepare now. Stay alert. Have a plan.
