A Charlotte man is facing a series of charges after Columbus County deputies say he broke into a detached garage and was found sleeping inside a vehicle early Sunday morning.

According to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, 34‑year‑old Demanuelle Kevon Wilson, of McTeal Place in Charlotte, was taken into custody without bond. His charges include felony possession of cocaine and opiates, marijuana possession, breaking and entering, breaking and entering a motor vehicle, and larceny.

Deputies were called to a home in the 25000 block of Andrew Jackson Highway East around 7 a.m. after the homeowner reported discovering an unknown man asleep in his Toyota SUV. The vehicle was parked inside a detached garage, and the owner told deputies the passenger door was open with Wilson asleep inside.

Following instructions from 911 telecommunicators, the homeowner secured a firearm while waiting for deputies to arrive.

Wilson reportedly told investigators he had been left on the roadside after a traffic stop the night before and entered the garage to sleep while waiting for someone to pick him up.

Deputies said Wilson’s clothing was found on the garage floor near the SUV, along with cash, a cellphone, and marijuana. A jacket located just outside the garage contained additional suspected narcotics and drug paraphernalia. The incident report also notes that Wilson allegedly helped himself to a bag of potato chips found either inside the garage or in the vehicle.
