Interactive trailer will bring hands‑on fire‑escape training to schools, festivals, and community groups across Columbus County.
CERRO GORDO, NC — Families across Columbus County will soon see a new tool rolling into schools, festivals, and neighborhood events: the Surrey Fire Safety Education House, freshly restored and officially ready for community use.

The mobile training unit is designed to teach children and adults how to recognize fire dangers inside a home and how to escape safely during an emergency. Inside the trailer, participants move through realistic rooms where they can practice checking doors, identifying hazards, crawling low under simulated smoke, and planning two ways out, skills that firefighters say save lives every year.
The project was made possible through a grant from International Paper, whose support allowed the Cerro Gordo Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad to repair, update, and relaunch the unit.
“This is a big step forward for our community,” the department shared. “Hands‑on education is one of the most effective ways to prevent tragedies before they happen.”
The Education House will be available for:
- Local schools across Columbus County and surrounding districts
- Town festivals and seasonal events, including those in Fair Bluff, Chadbourn, Tabor City, and Lake Waccamaw
- Church groups, civic clubs, and youth programs
- Safety days hosted by neighboring departments such as Acme‑Delco‑Riegelwood, Brunswick, and Horry County partners
Residents can expect to see the trailer at upcoming spring and summer events, including community days, fire prevention programs, and back‑to‑school safety fairs.

Firefighters emphasize that early education is one of the strongest defenses a community can build. With this new tool back in service, Cerro Gordo is expanding that mission one family at a time.
