Seasoning ingredient may be contaminated; products were distributed nationwide, including North Carolina
RECALL: Utz Quality Foods has issued a voluntary recall of several varieties of its Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips after a supplier reported a potential Salmonella contamination in a seasoning ingredient containing dry milk powder. The recall was posted through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s enforcement reporting system and includes products distributed nationwide, meaning North Carolina consumers may have purchased the affected bags.
According to the company, the recalled chips were produced with a seasoning blend supplied by California Dairies, Inc., which recently initiated its own recall of dry milk powder due to possible contamination. While no illnesses have been reported, Utz says the action is being taken “out of an abundance of caution.”
The recall covers specific lots of Zapp’s and Dirty brand chips, including flavors such as Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt & Vinegar, Big Cheezy, Maui Onion, Sour Cream & Onion.
The FDA advises anyone who has purchased the recalled chips to not consume them. Products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Symptoms of Salmonella infection can include fever, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, and may be more severe in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
Utz customer service can be reached at 877.423.0149 for questions about refunds or product identification.
