BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC — One year ago this week, the City of Boiling Spring Lakes faced one of its most significant public safety challenges in recent history. May 2nd marks the anniversary of the Sunset Road Fire, a blaze that ignited around 10:00 a.m. in 2025 and quickly evolved into a week-long battle against a 1,400-acre wildfire.

The fire, which moved through heavily wooded and undeveloped areas, put local emergency infrastructure to the ultimate test. Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue personnel, supported by nearly every department in Brunswick County, worked around the clock to establish containment lines and protect residential neighborhoods.

The primary objective throughout the week of chaos was structure protection. Despite the fire’s rapid growth, fire officials report that no homes were lost during the event. While a few small accessory structures sustained damage, the strategic placement of apparatus and personnel kept the fire largely away from populated zones.

Public safety officials credited the “commitment and purpose” of the first responders, noting that while a few firefighters suffered minor injuries on the lines, the overall safety of both residents and responders remained intact.

Today, the physical “scars” of the fire remain a visible part of the local landscape, but signs of renewal are emerging. New green ground growth has begun to cover the 1,400-acre burn scar, and local timber is showing signs of recovery.

Reflecting on the anniversary, fire officials expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming community support during the crisis. Local citizens provided food, water, and resources to the command post throughout the week, a gesture described by the department as “beyond humbling.”

As the community moves forward, local leadership remains committed to the lessons learned during the Sunset Road Fire, citing a strengthened bond between regional emergency services and the citizens they protect.
