D.O.T. Stormwater Drain Project in Whiteville

Crews with the N.C. Department of Transportation spent Wednesday cleaning stormwater drains along Madison Street, a project that temporarily blocked several parking spaces and caused minor traffic delays. Officials said the work will clear and, when needed, reline the drainage lines to improve stormwater flow in the flood‑prone downtown area.

The maintenance is expected to provide long‑term benefits as well. Improved drainage helps extend the lifespan of nearby pavement and sidewalks, and reducing blockages lowers the flood risk for surrounding businesses.

Work was scheduled to continue Thursday. City officials and the DOT are urging drivers to stay alert for workers and equipment in the roadway and to avoid driving around pylons or barricades.
